It is best practice to clean a water cooler every 3 months. This will prevent the growth of bacteria which could lead to health issues. It’s also highly recommended that you change your bottle when emptying it for a refill as this will ensure a fresh supply of water.
It is easier to do just before changing a bottle and will only take you about 15 minutes: unplug the cooler, remove the empty bottle and drain any remaining water from the reservoir.
If it is shelf-life you are concerned about, you have a good six months before you need to replace your water jug. Although water itself does not technically expire, bottled water should not be kept indefinitely.
